Tips for Better Results
Use crossing letters aggressively
In coded crosswords, every letter appears in at least one across and one down word. Use crossing confirmations to lock in codes.
Look for common endings
-TION, -MENT, -NESS, -LING, -ING are very common. If you spot these patterns, you can decode multiple letters at once.
Decode short words first
Short words like THE (T, H, E) and AND (A, N, D) decode up to 6 of the most common letters instantly.
Check the code number frequency
The most frequent code number in the entire grid almost certainly represents E — the most common letter in English.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating it like a standard crossword
In coded crosswords, every answer uses the same number-to-letter mapping. A letter that appears once must always use the same code.
Ignoring crossing word confirmations
Never finalise an answer without checking it against the crossing words. A word that works alone may contradict a crossing entry.
Assuming codes are in alphabetical order
Code 1 is not necessarily A, code 2 is not B. Codes are assigned randomly in each puzzle.
Not using known starter letters
Most coded crosswords give you 2–3 letters already filled in. Enter those as known mappings in Advanced Options immediately.
