Before entering the pattern, count how many times each code number appears in the puzzle. More repeats = fewer valid words.

If you still get too many results, enable Strict Mode: different number codes must map to different letters.

Patterns like 112.2 (where two codes each repeat) are the most common in newspaper codewords and easiest to solve with this tool.

If you already know that code 5 = E, enter 5=e in Known Letters to drastically narrow results.

Not using numbers for repeated positions

If the same number appears twice in your puzzle word, you must use that same number in both positions of your pattern — not a wildcard.

In the real puzzle, check carefully whether two positions really share a code or have different codes before entering your pattern.

Forgetting multi-digit codes

Codewords sometimes use codes 10–26. The solver handles multi-digit numbers correctly — just type them directly (e.g. 1014.2).

Keep Strict Mode on unless you specifically need to allow two different codes to map to the same letter.
